Picks of the Week № 40 📍

Hello, week № 40.

I have travel on the brain. Despite COVID-19’s persistent rage, life goes on. Mister Jupiter is flying again – there’s only so much WFH that pilots can do, and my annual gals trip is coming up (it was booked months ago!). So with work and leisure trips coming up, I want to share some favorites relating to an upcoming long drive for me.

For what it’s worth I define “road trip” as a single drive in 10+ hours. If you’re driving single-digit hours it’s just a long drive. I know this definition is personal to me. Mister Jupiter says that I have trucker blood – and I agree. My upcoming long drive should only be about nine hours, so I’m looking forward to a nice long solo drive to my destination, and a second nice long drive back home a few days later. Ah.

Here are my five favorites this week:

  • Car Humidifier
  • Leather Jackets
  • Coach Briefcase
  • Intermittent Fasting
  • Audible.com Subscription

— CAR HUMIDIFIER
I just love humidifiers because my skin is so dry – sometimes even crispy after a hot shower – so I have a few humidifiers.

This little one for the car is an essential oil diffuser, but I still like it. I prefer to recycle my car’s interior air, so I like to think the tiny humidifier keeps my car more fresh than without. This particular device could have more secure threading, but it works well enough. I haven’t tried to use the USB ports because I keep this humidifier in the backseat.

When I remember to fill it, I fill with filtered water and a few drops of eucalyptus oil. I can’t smell the oil as it diffuses, but I still do it because my car continues to smell fresh. Also I like car accessories.

— LEATHER JACKETS
I have different leather jackets for all sorts of situations. For my upcoming trip I am planning on bringing one that’s really just a pretty windbreaker, and another for glam warmth.

Both were thrifted which was a huge money saver.

  1. My pretty windbreaker is a medium brown leather jacket by Escada Sport. The sleeves are cropped and breezy, the lining is a high quality jersey. It’s too short for warming, but it’s perfect for cool days when I need just a little warmth.
  2. My glam warmth option is a silver holographic leather jacket by Mackage. This one is a classic motorcycle style jacket – but lamb leather so it’s definitely for fashion not protection. It’s flashy, warm, and perfect for strolling at dusk.

— COACH BRIEFCASE
This year I finally replaced my old laptop bag that I have used for ten years or so. It was a plain Golla laptop bag and it was just what I like; plain, functional, well-constructed.

I decided that I would finally get a nice new laptop case or miscellaneous traveling tech bag – thank goodness that Coach Outlet heard me. This is a travel pick because I might record a podcast while I’m out of town, and I will need my laptop for editing. I haven’t decided yet…but I love my upgraded laptop bag.

If I don’t need it on the upcoming trip, I will certainly use it each time I do need to travel with my laptop, iPad, or whatever I need to keep handy that’s too big for my purse.

— INTERMITTENT FASTING
Fasting and traveling are meant to be together, it makes life so much easier.

My first experience with fasting and traveling was when I barely started and was intentionally burning my own body fat for the first time (though I have accidentally done this many times because I was just too busy to eat). It was December and I had just drained my glycogen stores and was experiencing ketosis when we flew from Texas to Hawai’i. For the first time I didn’t get hangry in transit and was only normal-tired upon arrival, I had plenty of energy that night for a long walk to a brewery.

Of course driving is more active than flying (as a passenger), so I welcome the long drive. Thanks to my car’s mighty 50+ miles per gallon I should only need two stops for gas. I’ll surely pop in for the restroom because I like staying hydrated – but travel otherwise is so simple when I don’t need to worry about what to eat along the way. I’ll miss my usual corndogs and (non-black) coffee, but honestly I prefer to use my stored energy whenever possible.

— AUDIBLE.COM SUBSCRIPTION
I just love audio books – so I love audible by extension.

I will probably listen to my newest purchase; The Fatburn Fix by Catherine Shanahan M.D. I don’t often listen or read fiction (but I did finally finish Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier), I listen to a lot of health/diet books because I love collecting practical knowledge. The Fatburn Fix is all about regaining metabolic flexibility to burn body fat for fuel – not necessarily for weight lost, but for metabolic health. This is the same author who helped me understand why reducing sugars and cutting out vegetable oils is definitely the way to go – her first book is Deep Nutrition and I recommend it to everyone who wants to eat healthier – especially if you’re feeding (or planning to feed) any infants or kids.

And that’s a wrap for this week! I hope that you’re traveling safe this season.
