Non-Chain Restaurants around Fort Leavenworth, Kansas

Long title, eh? I don’t like it either but sometimes I need long words . I wish I could call this a Newcomer’s Food Guide to Leavenworth Kansas, or A Military Spouse’s Leavenworth Restaurant Recommendations, but I cannot be so broad. What I can be is specific and talk about my favorite non-chain food options in the area. (At least in 2018 when this post was originally written. It’s been lightly edited since then.)

This list is good for omnivores, especially those with adventurous taste buds. And now, in no particular order, here are my favorite non-chain restaurants around Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Coming to Fort Leavenworth and tired of eating in chain restaurants? I know that feeling! Here are some non-chains for you to check out #fortleavenworth #milbogger #latte

also bulk spices

Meriwether’s (702 Cherokee St, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048)
www.facebook.com/MeriwethersCoffee/
It’s an eclectic coffee shop with artistic foam and a good breakfast burrito. But wait, there’s more! They sell bulk goods like almonds and quinoa, also bulk spices. There are local-made kitchenwares, and Kansas City coffee & chocolates. They have two large seating areas, so this is a great place for small to medium size groups. Two tips: #1 the line will reach the door on Saturdays, arrive early; #2 Definitely get a donut, I love their strawberry basil donut!

A hasty update, Meriwether’s has closed. #ladyjupiter #updates #Meriwethers #LeavenworthKS

The Wizard of Pho (210 S. Broadway, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048)

I didn’t expect to find pho in town, so this was a happy surprise. If you haven’t had it, make sure to arrive hungry. If you are an established pho lover, then you will be pleased with the broth -it’s always perfect.

Green Dirt Farm (1099 Welt Street, Weston, Missouri 64098)

Coming to Fort Leavenworth and tired of eating in chain restaurants? I know that feeling! Here are some non-chains for you to check out #fortleavenworth #milbogger #wine

This is in Weston, a very short drive from Leavenworth. This is my go-to spot to share with visitors. This sheep farm sells award winning sheeps-milk cheeses, both as-is to take home and prepared to enjoy on the spot. The shop shares space with local winery Vox Vineyards –the wine & cheese flights are wonderful. We buy all of our Kansas City Canning Company shrubs from here, and when I need a variety of meats they never disappoint. If you’re in the mood for a serious grilled cheese order “The Stinky One.”

best local fish & chips

O’Malley’s Pub (500 Welt St, Weston, Missouri 64098)
www.facebook.com/omalleysinweston/
Sharing beers with friends is always fun. Sharing beers with friends whilst 60 feet underground in a former ice house with live music is more fun. There is a ground level restaurant, and they have the best local fish & chips. Trust me on this, I buy fish & chips everywhere -O’Malley’s wins for this area.

Grinders High Noon (206 Choctaw St, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048)
www.facebook.com/GrindersHighNoon/
Mister Jupiter and I don’t watch cable, so we didn’t know about Grinders and their Diners Drive-Ins and Dives fame. We got used to the downtown location when we lived in Downtown Kansas City (love the tacos!), and were happy to see one in Leavenworth. Grinders High Noon (formerly High Noon Saloon) doesn’t have the same tacos, but they do have the same pizzas and grinders. Surprisingly family friendly, this one is always good for a pizza lunch buffet or one of their daily specials. They keep up with their Facebook page, so that day’s specials are never a mystery.

    1. Right?! You and I both…it’s officially on my calendar for the week. It’s happening! Thinking it’d be great to meet F2F with other military spouse bloggers living here–let me know if you or others you know would be interested in a meet up 🙂
