Picks of the Week № 28 📍

Hello, week № 28.

Here is a fresh batch of little homey things that have been giving me joy this week. Happy reading and I hope that you too are finding joy in the little things around you this week and all of the weeks.

  • Naps
  • Hashweh
  • Half & half
  • Zoom for Continued Education
  • Thrifted Toddler Jackets

— Naps
Who doesn’t love a good nap?!

Kid Jupiter takes a nice long nap each day, and I try to take a nap during his nap if I can. He’s an only child, and I’m a stay-at-home-blogger, so I can often spare 30 minutes each day to get in my bed and zone out. I will totally sleep if I can, but often I just zone out and feel refreshed from that.

Otherwise I use the Kid’s nap times to cook and clean – so I definitely use the time wisely. Well…I try to. I have definitely squandered many nap times with unfulfilling Facebook scrolling. Nobody’s perfect (least of all me!).

— Hashweh
This is a Lebanese lamb and rice dish that I super love.

No, we’re not Lebanese or even Middle Eastern – we just love all of the food! I found this recipe in March 2020, when COVID-19 prompted the first lockdowns, and first waves of grocery hoarding.

My grocery shopping habits were forced to change because I couldn’t find basics like ground beef, or pasta. So I started cooking with more lamb (that was available because it’s more expensive) and started making our own noodles. Hashweh is just ground lamb seasoned with cinnamon and nutmeg, plus rice and whatever else you want. It’s a snap to make in an electric pressure cooker, and super easy to customize.

This dish is especially a hit with my toddler because he can easily grab the cooled rice and crumbled lamb. Depending on our vegetables on hand I may throw in a diced zucchini or a can of carrots – it’s perfect because it is so versatile.

— Half & Half
This is so I can make breve lattes at home.

Ages ago someone said “you’d like breve lattes” so I started ordering and loving them. I’m not afraid to eat fatty foods, so learning that breve = half and half didn’t scare me. Then a decade later I learned about ketosis and realized that I had often been eating keto without realizing it; breve latte on the way to work, cream cheese for lunch – no wonder I was so slim in my 20s!

Fast forward to my mid 30’s not as slim, and I work at home. I also have a Nespresso machine and can make faux-espressos anytime I want. This week I want breve lattes, and I love being able to make such a satisfying drink in minutes. I sip from these charming Italian glasses, and generally will have a nearly 3oz Nespresso pull that I top with at least 2oz half and half. If I’m feeling extra exciting I will add a dollop of grass-fed butter or ghee to increase the fat content.

— Zoom for Continued Education
This is pure convenience and I love it.

Right now I only need regular CE for my volunteer position with my husband’s squadron. Thanks to a certain pandemic, evening Zoom is an option now. Previously the CE would be held on-base, childcare and maybe lunch provided, but that didn’t work for me.

But now that evening Zooms are an option, I was able to attend a CE event while getting Kid Jupiter ready for bed. I plugged into my AirPods, disabled my camera and audio, and listened with Farmageddon playing in the background. Then I fully put Kid Jupiter down for bed while still on the call.

The Zoom CE was perfect because I was able to take notes, play with my toddler, put him to bed, and still actually participate in the call. I would love to join a typical in-person CE sometime, but until then being able to Zoom was perfect and I love that option. I promise that I really am generally perceived as an extrovert, but I also really jive with the lockdown life.

— Thrifted Toddler Jackets
I love jackets in general, but I think that the tiny track jackets for little humans ARE THE CUTEST THINGS IN THE WHOLE WORLD.

I do 98% of my thrift shopping online at Thredup.com, and 2% on Poshmark. One day I’ll shop in person again, but this isn’t the week. I love shopping on ThredUP because I can save searches, and only see those parameters and results.

I’ll be totally honest here (why wouldn’t I?!) – I open the ThredUP app and check my saved searches at least once each day…just in case. If one of my searches populates – I look as soon as possible, and add it to my cart if I need it. Once something is in my cart I look for toddler track jackets from that same warehouse, so I can bundle and only pay one shipping charge.

Shopping habits aside, I love track jackets all around and think that most humans look great in them. Everybody in this house has at least one. My current favorite is a Burton jacket (color blocked blues), Mister Jupiter’s current favorite is Adidas (black stripes on gray), and Kid Jupiter’s best fitting is also Adidas (white stripes on red and blue).
